The Diagnosis and Treatment of Buccal Bifurcation Cyst of Mandible: Case Report
Choi Hye-Ran

Park Kwan-Soo
Abstract
The mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst (MBBC) is a rare inflammatory odontogenic cyst that was first reported by Stoneman and Worth in 1983. It is occurred by the rests of epithelial cell in periodontal ligament of the molar bifurcation. The pathogenesis is unsure, but is assumed to be stimulation of infection. The children aged 4 to 14 years are mostly affected and a mandibular first molar is commonly associated and the associated tooth was occurred with the buccal tilting of the crown. Traditionally, the affected tooth was extracted and the cystic lesion was enucleated.
However, more conservative methods are gradually adopted. This report aimed to reveal an uncommon case of MBBC. We would like to present two cases of 6 and 7-year-old patients which are diagnosed with imaging study and biopsy and treated by surgical approach. We also intend to suggest a scheme of differential diagnosis and conservative treatment method. Timely diagnosis and treatment after careful work-up can be key success factors to prevent unnecessary extraction of affected permanent teeth.
